A Treasure Trove of Art

SMK is Denmark’s national gallery and the country’s largest art museum.

Here, you can explore a treasure trove of art, comprising masterpieces by artists from many countries. The collection spans 700 years of art history, ranging from the early Renaissance to cutting-edge contemporary art. From Rembrandt and Rubens to Anna Ancher and Danh Vo.

At the museum, two architectural styles merge when Vilhelm Dahlerup’s historicist building from 1896 meets Anna Maria Indrio’s modern extension from 1998. The two parts are elegantly and playfully connected by the high-ceilinged Sculpture Street, which boasts skylights and views of the open skies as well as of the Østre Anlæg park which surrounds the museum.

Exhibitions at SMK

The museum’s permanent collection offers a unique overview of 700 years of Danish and international art.

The collection of European Art 1300–1800 brings you face to face with some of art history’s true heavyweights such as Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn. In Danish and Nordic Art 1750–1900, you can explore Scandinavian art from the Danish Golden Age to the birth of modernism.

Featuring several works by André Derain, Georges Braque and not least Henri Matisse, SMK’s collection of French Art 1900–1930 is internationally renowned and an absolute must-see. In Danish and International Art after 1900, the museum presents more than 500 works spanning two floors, featuring artists such as Emil Nolde, Per Kirkeby, Kirsten Justesen and Jytte Rex.

The museum’s changing special exhibitions also attract international attention, and a range of activities such as talks, surprising evening events, guided tours and much more helps making art relevant to all, prompting discussions on what art is and what it has to offer in contemporary society.

SMK Shop

The SMK Shop is always worth a visit if you are looking for a gift, something new for the home – or simply for inspiration and new ideas.

SMK Shop offers a large and rich selection of international art books, exhibition catalogues, unique design objects, posters and postcards as well as toys, games and colourful treats for children.

The shop is open throughout the museum’s opening hours and can be visited without entering the museum.

When visiting SMK with a Parkmuseerne ticket, you can enjoy a 10% discount in the museum shop on the day of your visit.

Kafeteria is SMK’s very special restaurant – an informal eatery with food based on principles of simplicity and sustainability.
